As we get older and older some of us have the ability to buy more and more. You know the American dream. But the video game release calender looks as follows.

Why does everything have to come out at the end of the year? I get that thats when people spend money and give gifts. And when the gamer generation’s mean age as 12 this made a lot of sense. Parents could very easily buy their kids new games that they want and didn’t want (why Hyperzone mom? Why?). But now the mean age is 25. We are older. Out of college and ready to spend ourselves into the grave! So why does everything still come out at a time of year that we have almost zero time to play?
We aren’t kids anymore when the free days after thanksgiving and Christmas meant we could play games from dusk till dawn. Now we are forced to spend those same days driving along the 95 corridor to see relatives that may or may not give a rats ass about us. But most of us – well maybe just me – would rather spend the time playing all the sweet ass games that just came out!
Tell the truth there’s at least one game you got as a gift during the holidays the last two years that you didn’t get around to play until almost valentines day.
Last year the video game makers attempted to create the second season. Some of the biggest releases of the year came out in from March to June. Nintendo basically blew their wad during this time. GTA 4 came out and we all forgot about it since. And Sony released their biggest gun. Metal Gear Solid 4. It was awesome but the problem was it was like that summer when the biggest blockbuster coming out was Godzilla. It sucked and the rest of the summer was lame because all of the studios thought it would be huge and didn’t release anything around it except asteroid movies.
What it’s going to take is a Jaws. Jaws was the first summer blockbuster. Before then the summer movie season didn’t exist. The general thought was that people didn’t go to the movies in the summer. They spent time with people doing stuff. But that all changed when Jaws came out and made 100 million in 1975 money. Adjusted for inflation it made more than 97 trillion dollars. After Jaws a movie called Star Wars came out and it was clear everything changed. Think the first zombie apocalypse and not the second. That kind of change.
The Video Game industry needs a Jaws. A game to come out and make a trillion billion rupees and prove to Video Game makers that releasing every thing in a three week period at Christmas is just going to make us play less and buy less.
