I hated the kingdom of the who gives a fuck. The movie is horrible. An exercise in torture. Frankly whatever I say I can’t say it as well as South Park. They devoted an entire episode to it. If you haven’t seen it, go watch it. Now.

While I was in the theater trying to ignore the massive display of douchebaggery going on right before my eyes I couldn’t help but think of the past. But not the far superior films of the 80′s. No this movie even tried to stink those up. No I thought about how 16 years prior we got a better Indiana Jones story. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. The game rocked and was a classic of a now dead genre, the point and click adventure game. For some reason when games started becoming 3D the point and click genre just died like some horrible Markab type plague swept through all of the production offices around the world. And I for one miss them very much.

There were two types of games I played on my PC back when I had one. Point and Click games and RTS. I would bounce between WarCraft or Dune 2000 and Gabriel Knight. All classics in their own right. Gabriel Knight is one of those lost games that is begging for a re-release. Begging. I had dozens of Point and Clicks and loved them all. They were just difficult enough to keep you going and the stories generally rocked. So when did they have to die out?

In some way’s I don’t think they have. They just morphed into other games and we have all suffered for it. I was playing the new DLC for Fallout 3 (which is awesome) and I found myself running around pressing A a lot to activate something so I can progress the story. Not really elegant but damn effective. It got me thinking on how many games I do that for. The all mighty action button that does everything and needs constant attention like a puppy. Think hard and you will realize how many games use this and call it gameplay.

When writing this up I discovered that those of you who missed out on Fate of Atlantis might be getting a crackerjack. Apparently the game will be an unlockable in the upcoming sure to be suckfest – Staff of Kings. But only on the Wii. A system that could and should resurrect the adventure game. If it did the Wii might be something worthwhile again.

Thoughts?
