I know there are quite a few people who visit this site that are downright Apple haters. I don’t really understand the feelings because while I prefer Apple, I don’t hate Windows. They are just operating systems. The whole debate is rather ridiculous.

Whether you like it or not the iPhone is in position to outsell the Sony PSP within the next year or so. The iPhone has had an explosive run in the phone market and in just over a year, with the App store, the iPhone/touch might really start putting a hamper on Sony’s handheld plans.

In a sense a the iPhone took the best aspects of both the DS and the PSP and made a killer game machine. The only problem is that way way too many games feel gimicky. And the fact that people are reluctant to pay more than “free” for anything on the App Store makes it really hard for hardcore games to come out on the thing.

The recent Mass Effect game is a good example. The story and design are totally sweet. But the gameplay relies way to much on the accelerometer. I truly hate games that require that. Why? Because they only work if you have the glass pointing towards the sky. So you’re always looking down crinking your neck.

The point of all this is that I think Apple backdoored themselves right into the handheld gaming market. They have a long way to go to get anywhere near Nintendo as Handheld Emperor. But how long until both Nintendo and Sony react to Apple and treat them as a competitor in their market?

    apple isn’t an operating system

I actually don’t know what you mean, honestly. I think there is a big difference between disapproving of an operating system and disapproving of a company. Apple, as a company, is very consumer unfriendly. Microsoft is, too, of course, and their history as such is well known. The situation today, however, is that Apple is significantly more “evil” than Microsoft.

On to the iPhone (and iPod touch, also, kind of)… you’re absolutely right about their market penetration, it is staggering and amazing. The hardware is fantastic and the ability to use apps is great, and there are loads of great apps and games. Unfortunately, to some people like myself, all that fancy shiny awesome is overshadowed by the iron fist of control that Apple holds over their consumers. Additionally, the app store is quite overpopulated with garbage, but this is a problem that can, and i am sure will, be fixed shortly. The iPhone has the potential to be amazing, if only Apple would relinquish their maddening control over it. Expand beyond AT&T, let people use alternate application repositories, chill out on DRM on videos, un-link from iTunes, and maybe we can start talking. Oh and add a reserve battery for phone-only functions. And make the batteries consumer-removable.

Alternatively, maybe all these great apps will come to Android as well. I saw a nice article about how devs can easily write an app once that will work on both iPhone and Android. The future HAS THE POTENTIAL to look bright.
