Wii-Price-Drop
It used to be that consoles started at 200 bucks and dropped from there. But let’s be honest. We all knew this was coming. I called it back in June. Some family friends were buying their mom a Wii and a Wii Fit for her birthday in early August and I told them that it would be dropping to 200 in late September. Well it’s late September and the Wii is indeed dropping to 200 bucks beginning on the 27th.

Now personally I couldn’t tell you the last time I turned my Wii on. Wait I can. It was about two months ago when Mad World came in the mail from Gamefly. After about 25 minutes I turned it off. The game was boring and annoying to me. I loved the art style but it was still weak sauce. Maybe I was being unfair but I just knew I wasn’t going to like it and wanted a different game off my Queue. My opinions aside the price drop is significant.

I don’t think it is a coincidence that all three of the consoles dropped in price at roughly the same time. After three years sales were starting to plateau and a price drop was needed. Most companies are banking on decent Christmas sales to pick up a lagging bottom line this year (God help us all if the economy doesn’t get what it wants). You know, the typical reasons for a price drop.

I’m just wondering if we are seeing the beginning stages of a ‘price war’. We all know that the PS3 and the elite are now 299. But Microsoft is now offering a 50-dollar rebate on the elite effectively bringing its price to 250. Probably didn’t like what the market research said of direct competition with the PS3. But it was a tad odd that it would have a price drop so quickly after one, even if it’s a ‘soft one’. If Sony follows through and suddenly offers a similar price drop to 250 do you think Microsoft will stay flat at 250? Or will they drop further?

Regardless, I’m pretty sure it’ll be a very merry Christmas for the big three.
