One of our superfans, Peter, sent me a text about two weeks ago telling me about this Android game that he found. At the time he thought it was cool and worth checking out. Since then he has barely come up for air. He sent me an email saying we should read it on the show like we’ve done in the past but I thought it would be better off as a post. Here is that email.

Hello Lance, Paul and Jess or Lance, Paul and Justin or Lance, Paul and Matt, or Lance Paul and Chris or Lance Paul and Trent or Lance, Justin and Chris or Lance Justin and Trent … I guess there are lots of possibilities but you get the point.

So every week you guys want to know what people are playing well here goes. Since I am abstaining until marriage (oh wait I mean until Xmas) to get the Black Ops there are really no Xbox games that are holding my attention. So I stumbled on to this awesome game that just recently became available for Android platform (apparently it has been on the iOS devices for a few months). Its Pocket Legends and holy shit fuck has it captivated my attention.

Let me preface this by saying that I have never played an MMORPG ever, not even a free trial. So other than the South Park episode about WoW and the cursory knowledge of what those games are like, pocket legends has been an eye opening experience. So first of all the game looks amazing. The controls are intuitive and fun. You get to level up and fight and dungeon raid and do all that crap, but on your cell phone in as long or as short bouts as you want. The drop in drop out join with buddies aspects of the game make it very engaging. I have probably logged about 6-8 hours on this thing in one week in short 10-15 min spurts. The multi-player aspect of the game is quite awesome and runs smoothly especially over 3g connections. Oh and you can play cross platform so iPhone friends can join up and kill baddies with their Android buddies. I can’t believe every game doesn’t have this level of multi-player cross platformage. It’s going to be hard to play another game on my phone with out comparing it to this.

So 10 days ago I was so pissed that there were no games other than CODBLOPS to look forward to this holiday season and then I get this gem of a game. The game is free and you can play the first 2 campaigns. Now if you want to buy additional dungeons/campaigns/super weapons etc you will have to buy platinum (think Microsoft points). For 5 bucks you can get 30 platinum, which can buy you 4 additional campaigns. I like it cause you can pay for what you want or ignore parts. There are PVP or story servers, capture the flag all sorts of things. But if you just want the story just buy those maps. Again once you play the game and see how much time and effort and how well the game plays, 5 bucks or even 15 or 20 if you decide to buy every map and level (of course they will make more and keep expanding the world) and its still way cheaper than millions of people pay for 1 month subscription to WoW.

Reasons why this is better than WoW (from a person who has never played it)
1) You can’t play WoW on a toilet without looking weird (who the hell brings a laptop to the toilet (especially at a restaurant))
2) You can’t play WoW with friends all over the world who are all probably on their respective toilets
3) WoW was so 2004 and its so 2010 (almost ’11) now get over it and get on Pocket Legends

So there. Concrete indisputable evidence that Pocket Legends is fun as fuck and you should be on it.

Just noticed that WoW was released today in 2004. What good timing!

  • Bradimus!

Peter is overselling this game way too much! I don’t know why he’s got such a boner for this thing but I played the first 2 (free) campaign worlds and I REFUSE to keep paying every time I want to open up a new part of the game. That’s my only gripe.

Like Peter, I’ve never even played RPG’s period, I always thought they were for nerds and people with furry fetishes but I will admit it was fun to play… until I told me that I had to pay to keep going. Also, it kills the crap out of your mobile device’s battery, even when I’m plugged in. Anyway, Peter needs to shut up at play Plants vs. Zombies like everyone else. (I heart PvZ.)

    FTW! (that’s for you Peter)

At the risk of starting a flame war, Bradimus is right on a few things. It kills your battery. You have to pay for it.

So if you dont like buying games you probably wont like this. Maybe this comes from my IT background, but I know how much money it costs to keep a bunch of servers running to support the workload. There are no ads in the game so those things have to be paid for in some way. I look at it like DLC, if you like the game you will get the DLC, if you dont you will play the trial area and go back to playing PvZ.

The nicest takeaway from the game is that it is an actual game. In the early days of arcade games they were very simple and that was it. For the most part that is where most mobile device games are stuck at. Some simple game concept or puzzles, maybe a mix of the two. This is a welcome change because it is a game you would expect to play on a PC or console with the same level of modern multiplayer interaction.

As soon as PvZ gets released for Android I’ll get on the boat, but playing a game like that on Xbox seems silly.

Bradimus is right and I’m gay. I apologize for wasting everyone’s time.

    PvZ FTW!!

  • Lance

I’m not so sure if that was Peter in the above comment….

  • Bradimus!

Thank you Peter, I’m glad you agree. Also, I had no idea of your sexual orientation. Kudos to you for keeping that hidden for so long!

  • Bradimus!

PS- Lance doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
