In anticaption for the recent release of Dead Space 2 I decided to buy Dead Space on the iPhone, which has its own unique story that leads into Dead Space 2. Now I played the first Dead Space on the XBox 360 and is a great looking game even by 2011 standards. The iPhone version follows suit with this trend. It’s a great looking game that is highly remincent of the level structure from the first DP (insert joke here).

Your story follows Vandal who is an engineer working on the Sprawl, a space station community full of civilians. At first you are led to think you’re doing some simple sabotage on the Sprawl but then you realise your responsible for the Necromorph (the baddies from the first game) infestation. You’re then tasked with stopping the infestation from spreading. The story is well plotted and full of those “am I going crazy” scenes the first Dead Space was known for. Also the minimal voice acting is done admirably.

All the systems from the first Dead Space are present here with a little extra weapons cut from the original, but done in a way that has you saying “that makes sense”. Some of the games systems are tighten up for IPhone play. For instance giving you more chances to hold off Necromorphs that get the drop on you with a trusty laser saw as well as the rechargable Kinesis module that puts enemy in slow motion for a short period of time.

The biggest downfall of the game is the controls get somewhat cluttered with the use of two fingers on screen. I’ve always thought the best IPhone games utilize one finger to its max potential. But most of this is forgotten when you play the game in the dark with head phones on. the sound quality is astounding for a game on your phone. The atmosphere is defiantly the strongest point of this game. For the price point of $7 you get a great game that also has new content for Dead Space 2 once you complete this game.
